DAVY JONES' LOCKEROOM: Chris Turner - Sunderland Goalkeeping Legend
DAVY JONES' LOCKEROOM: Chris Turner - Sunderland Goalkeeping Legend
SAFC has a history of having goalkeeping legends and Chris Turner is one of those.
In this interview Chris talks about how he became a goalkeeper instead of an outfield player which he wanted to be.
He goes on to talk about the dressing room spirit.
In 1985 we were relegated to the Second Division (Championship equivalent) he became Player of the Year.
This was the same year that we lost the League Cup Final (Milk Cup) at Wembley 1-0 to Norwich (own goal).
That game spawned the "Friendship Trophy" which is still played between Sunderland and Norwich each time they play.
Chris Turner looks back fondly at his time on Wearside and Roker Park.
He also mentions the violence at Chelsea - an unbelievable night and I remember this well.

I have to go to work now so I might get the chance to see this at a later date.
Wasn't Chris Turner the one who the fans clubbed together to buy him back after being sold on?

Eeeeee bloody hell aye, I forgot to mention that.
It was the Chris Turner fund and you could go to the bank to pay money in but that failed.
I wonder what happened to the money paid in?
Possibly given to a charity I expect.

I was thinking that as well.
He must look after himself and he's the sort that will go on and on.
