All the Sunderland 1973 squad are given Freedom of the City
This applies to every player whether they took part in the final or not.
I think this is long overdue because not a day goes by without people discussing this cup final or thinking about it.
It was a big part of the history of SAFC.
Sunderland starting XI: Richard Philip ‘Dick’ Malone, Ronald George ‘Ron’ Guthrie, Michael Frederick ‘Micky’ Horswill, David Vernon ‘Dave’ Watson, Richard Ernest ‘Ritchie’ Pitt, Robert ‘Bobby’ Kerr, Dennis Tueart, Victor Lewis ‘Vic’ Halom, David Young, William ‘Billy’ Hughes and John Ian Porterfield.
Billy Hughes and goal scorer, Ian Porterfield, have since passed away.
Sunderland won high flying Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley on May the 5th, 1973.

These are proposals and all is not what it seems when you read into the article a little more
I wonder what @Trish thinks of this?

The proposals failed to gain universal support however, with the council’s Liberal Democrat group attempting to derail the plans after baulking at the estimated £35,000 cost and claiming the side had already been honoured when the club as a whole was given the freedom of the city off the back of the FA Cup victory in 1974.
The proposal was eventually approved with 54 votes in favour, seven against and a single abstention.

It seems that the Lib-Dems in Sunderland are just going on about spending, is this their new stance or just their way of grabbing votes.
Trying to put the block on the 1973 Wembley heroes is a vote loser - that I can guarantee!

Just need to try to win it again before I end up in one of these.
