Crowtree Leisure Centre Comes Crashing Down

Post by Paper Terry »

Crowtree Leisure Centre Comes Crashing Down

At the heart of Sunderland once stood a massive leisure centre, in its time was the biggest indoor leisure centre in Europe.

With its simple design and stainless steel panels it always a focal point for many people.

But, it was always going to be in the road if ever the city centre was to be redeveloped.

Anyone remember when it opened in 1977?

Anyone remember how many times parts of the roof were blown off by high winds lol.

I remember Prince Charles and the opening ceremony.

I did go to the ice rink there a few times also but going round and round an ice rink I found a bit boring lol

Shame its gone but maybe we can extend the Bridges shopping centre and stop others doing out of town shopping centres.

If its like the Vaux episode though, that land in Sunderland City Centre will lay derelict for years.

..... and Sunderland, the underdogs, are in the lead!

It got a bit dusty when some of the big bits came crashing down. I hope there was no asbestos floating around.

It really needed a move because the shops should come first. In its day Crowtree may have been a goo leisure centre but it was right in the middle of town and to be honest it was in the way of progress.

I am sad to see Crowtree being flattened surely they don't have to knock everything down in the name of progress?

Sunderland has lost many an iconic building over the years.

I might have the day off today!
