What's the independents stand for?

It's an individual thing I believe.

We have an independent in Sunderland, at least I think he is still a councillor.

He stood in Houghton and he was against the rubbish being dumped in their back yard.

While I agree that independents would be a good thing in some ways how would they all get on in the council chamber all fighting for individual things?
