Sunderland Elections 2015

The Sunderland Forum is all about local issues. The City of Sunderland obviously includes, Washington, Houghton and Hetton. However, we allow news, views and gossip from all areas surrounding Wearside.

If you say you will be voting Labour people look at you as if you are the enemy.
Say you will vote Conservative and they will walks a way from you
Say you will vote UKIP and they are tending to agree nowadays.
Whether they get enough for a seat on Sunderland council remains to be seen.
By the way has anyone noticed how quiet it is on the political front.
No leaflets or anything.
I am not complaining.

Is it lawful to spoil the ballot paper in either the General Election or the local council elections?
Would it be lawful to actually spoil any ballot paper in any form of election?

I might have the day off today!

Cam, its your ballot paper and you can do exactly what you like with it. But, like everything else I wouldn't go overboard with it. While it is not against the law to spoil your ballot paper, making libelous remarks for instance is. I believe that every ballot paper is numbered and that if they wanted to, they could find you.

I don't believe they would come and get you because in my opinion they wouldn't want to show the world that ballot papers are tampered with this way. Remember it is supposed to be a secret ballot. There would be outrage if someone was ever traced for voting and that would also apply to spoilt ballot papers. In a democracy, the cross on the ballot papers should and always will be secret. Should that trust ever be broken, people would refuse to vote and there's democracy out of the window.

The answer is that you can lawfully spoil your ballot paper.

Here's a website that encourages you to spoil your vote: http://www.spoilyourvote.co.uk/

Of course you can spoil your ballot paper and Jackal has hit the nail on the head. They really wouldn't want to be seen to trace anyone in a "secret" ballot. It wont ever happen.

If you accidentally spoil your ballot paper just report back to those at the desk and you will be issued with a new ballot paper.

I would love for some potential councilor or MP come to my door and I would ask what they were doing to stamp out corruption.

The first one who tells me they will highlight every case they see will get my vote and I wouldn't care what political party they stand for.

In Sunderland recently we have seen two greedy councilors grabbing what they could - this needs stamping on as well. So come and knock on my door and promise me the above and your vote is assured.
