New River Wear Crossing - The Newest Sunderland Bridge

The Sunderland Forum is all about local issues. The City of Sunderland obviously includes, Washington, Houghton and Hetton. However, we allow news, views and gossip from all areas surrounding Wearside.

New River Wear Crossing - The Newest Sunderland Bridge

New River Wear Crossing - The Newest Sunderland Bridge

Anyone travelling along Wessington Way and Pallion areas will no doubt have seen much activity due to the planned construction of the new Sunderland Bridge.

The new River Wear crossing will have many benefits for Wearside which will help regenerate many parts of Sunderland and obviously relieve traffic congestion.

Paper Terry has posted a new article about this massive project on the Wearside Online - Blogs

Ok we didn't get the iconic Viking horn bridge that was well and truly beefed up but this one will do the job.
Its a shame that we didn't get the original planned bridge but in these dark days of austerity cuts its about the best we could have hoped for.

Here is the artists impression of the Viking horn bridge that was originally planned for the River Wear - I would have loved to have seen this built:

Ok Sunderland never got its iconic bridge but the one we are getting looks pretty smart to me
No complaints from me on this design.
The money saved should go to build the footbridge from Deptford / Millfield to the Stadium of Light.

The iconic bridge for Sunderland would have looked ok and been a magnificent landmark. However, I think the one we have been offered is a sensible solution and to be fair it looks great.
I am happy to see work being done on the new River Wear crossing as a new bridge has been needed for ages. I will be relieved when its all finished as it will get rid of some congestion on the other Sunderland bridges. Lets just all be happy that the work has begun.

I suppose we could beef this new bridge up a bit.
I would have liked to have seen the Viking horn iconic bridge being built too.
This one will do.
Has the new Sunderland bridge got a name yet otherwise we will keep referring to the new Sunderland bridge

It really does and to be honest I can't wait for the thing to be up and running.
Just imagine travelling from say the town to the A19 or Nissan areas which will be done in a few short minutes.
I wonder what the speed limits will be on the new Sunderland bridge/road system.

Not seen or heard anything yet.
They will probably leave that down to a competition in the primary schools of Sunderland.

I personally think it looks good.
Of course the Viking horn bridge would have been iconic for Sunderland but if you compare the Hylton Bridge with the new one then there is no comparison.
The Hylton Bridge or the A19 Bridge must have really been done on the cheap so lets count our blessings.
I travel regularly from Hendon and the port to the Nissan areas and this new road system will be brilliant once it is all up and running.
