Former Savoy bingo hall in Southwick - severe fire
The Savoy was a former bingo hall on Southwick Green in Sunderland.
Gareth Carr was using the building as the Southwick Auction Rooms but was to vacate the building after an ongoing dispute with the landlord.
The police visited the property a few times during the day as the landlord tried to take possession.
Apparently the roof collapsed in on itself because of the fire and a wall collapsed onto Beaumont Street.
It is not thought that anyone was trapped in the building at the time.
Fire crews, police and ambulance were all in attendance.
The Savoy is an old, well loved building and it would be a massive loss to Southwick should it have to be demolished.
There is a report in the Sunderland Echo.
There are a few videos on facebook of the blaze which look pretty bad:

The Echo has been constantly updating the page on this. It looks pretty bad. I suspect a few businesses in the immediate area will lose some trade as well as a result of this.

I saw this fire while driving towards the Queen Alexandra Bridge from B&Q.
It was well ablaze and lit up the sky but I couldn't place where it was or what was on fire.
Looking at the images, I doubt whether the building can be saved.

Oh dear
That's canny bad like.
I am well familiar with the Savoy like most people on the north side of the water.
It's a well known landmark and such a shame.

You could see the fire from all over the city.

That was a bad fire. Looks like it might have been packed with highly flammable materials.

After seeing the fire it looks like the building is doomed.
