Pavement parking could be banned in England
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/uk-51844446
"Parking on pavements could be banned in England to help pedestrians, the Department for Transport has said."
"The AA, however, has warned a ban could have "unintended consequences" and cause more widespread "parking chaos".
There are certain streets in Sunderland, where this would not be possible imo. The streets are too narrow, if cars didn't park with two wheels on the pavements, then it would block off the whole street.
Then people would complain that emergency service vehicles couldn't pass through the streets. Can't have it both ways

I thought this was already illegal and has been for years.
I never park on the pavement ever.

Sometimes, it's impossible not to. If the streets are too narrow, you've got no choice but to do it.thingamajig wrote: ↑12 Mar 2020, 16:53 I thought this was already illegal and has been for years.

If there was no option I would park further down the street.
Parking on the pavement is illegal and if a careless parker forces a woman with a double buggy on the road then there's an accident, they are done for.
Decades ago in London people would literally push the cars back on the road and I remember that well.
I can't find any clips on YouTube but it happened regularly.
From then on I decided that pavements really are for pedestrians and cars belong on the road.

The road will be impassable. It's just not possible

Parking on the pavement is illegal but the police can use discretion and they even do it themselves, sometimes in places where they don't need to.

It's OK if you've got nice wide roads, but in narrow streets it's impossible to park completely on the road, without blocking the whole road off.thingamajig wrote: ↑12 Mar 2020, 22:13Parking on the pavement is illegal but the police can use discretion and they even do it themselves, sometimes in places where they don't need to.
It's an unworkable law to enforce in particular areas.

Re: Pavement parking could be banned in England
I wouldn't dream of parking on pavements.
I park a lot in the long streets at Hendon and the side streets off Chester Road and never need to even if the other cars have 2 wheels on it.
Those streets are narrow but there really is no need to park indiscriminately.
I've often seen women with double buggies struggling to get passed which is totally wrong.
For one thing I am not going to inconvenient pedestrians.
Likewise I am not prepared to potentially damage my tyres and suspension.
Then there's people who walk by in a more confined space and accidentally or worse still deliberately damage my car.
Sorry but parking on the pavement is wrong and I don't do it regardless of the situation.

My kids are up now but those streets near the post office on Chester Road always caused me loads of grief. Anyone who thinks they need to park on the pavement there are wrong. They don't.
