Hundreds of Muslims Die Near Mecca - Stampede on Hajj

Hundreds of Muslims Die Near Mecca - Stampede on Hajj

Over 700 people are killed and more than 800 people are injured in Mina just outside Mecca where around 2 million people are performing the annual hajj pilgrimage. The final death toll will rise and so will the numbers given about the injured.

In 1990 there were 1,426 people killed in a similar stampede in a pedestrian tunnel.

That's a lot of people who are putting their faith before their own safety, but where was God?

Allowing so many people to visit the place in one go will always result in deaths. In the west we have safety procedures and will learn from the mistakes and act. Things are not like this in other countries. Once the stampede starts, there is no way to stop it and the tragedy will begin. Don't expect the authorities there to put safety measures in place soon. That's just not going to happen.

Next time the British moan about health and safety all you need do is point them in the direction of these disasters. Remember also that Sunderland has a disaster of its own in the Victoria Hall panic in which nearly 200 children died.

Health and safety may be a pain at times but it will save lives.

In under developed countries, especially those with massive populations, putting health and safety measures in place would prove very difficult. These type of disasters will happen forever.

Stampedes at Mecca will always happen.
Try stopping the millions of travellers who go there from all over the world.
Deaths will be a regular occurrence and only reported when they are on mass like this disaster.
