POLL: Is it a derby when Sunderland play Middlesbrough?

Post by blockheed »

There has been yet another debate about whether it is a derby when Sunderland plays against Middlesbrough. So what do you all think? Vote in this poll and have your say!

Poor Boro is isolated down there. They are a decent-sized club with no other large club close by, so who else can they say is their derby team? Sure, they have Hartlepool and Darlington, but those teams are slightly insignificant in terms of size. Their only other possible rivals are Leeds United but ask anyone down there and they will laugh at you if you go on about it being a derby game.

My opinion: yes, it is a derby match - Black Cats vs The Smoggies and Sunderland fans always look forward to this game. We should all look forward to the Wear-Tees derby at the Stadium of Light. Of course, this Monday is the Tees-Wear derby at the Riverside Stadium and the Mackems will be there in force, creating one of the best atmospheres in that footballing week.

It really has and I've heard the stupidity on local radio who know nothing.
It even has its own wiki page.
Obviously, the River Wear should come first but what do they know?

Didn't Tony Mowbray play for Middlesbrough?
I have always thought of the Wear and Tees derby so I would say yes to this question.

It is a derby despite the interest kicking about now, especially on local BBC Radio CRAP and the uneducated.

It was a derby many years ago but when we were up there going strong and stuffing the Maggies, the Boro matches were just another game. We will have to treat these like derbies again for a while because Sunderland has a way to go before we get back to where we belong. Poor Smoggies will never make it big like we can. I think it still is a derby though.
