Obviously Sunderland is in the north east of England

Firstly, the Stadium of Light location is not too bad. But with up to 50,000 possible visitors to the area, parking is a nightmare. So, it is better to use public transport. Also, there are Park and Ride schemes in place.

As an illustration, the map below shows a bird’s eye view of the Super Sunderland Stadium of Light location.

SAFC address: Stadium of Light, Millenium Way, Sunderland SR5 1SU

Public Transport

Nearest train station: Sunderland, catch a Metro train from that station to St Peters or walk (directions and map here).

Nearest Metro stations: St Peters and Stadium of Light. Indeed, St Peters Metro station is the best one to use. However, on the day of the match, there are restrictions sometimes at that station heading to Tyneside.

Buses: Bus numbers 2, 3, 4, 12, 13, 15 and 16 from Stagecoach have a frequent service that stop very close to the ground. Indeed, Go Ahead also provide many services too. Moreover, SoL is about a twenty minute walk from Park Lane Interchange.

Parking

Car parking: Since parking facilities at the ground are only available for permit holders, parking there is impossible. Obviously, you can buy a pass. However, these parking bays usually have a reserve on them well in advance.

Indeed, on the day of the game, the streets surrounding the Stadium of Light also have restrictions, except for residents. Although there are a small amount of parking places close to the Stadium of Light, you need to know where they are. Local people obviously know these places. But, be aware that the authorities regularly ticket in those streets where there are restrictions. So, for some people, the Park and Ride scheme might be a better option.

Other Options

Park and Ride: Indeed, there are multiple park and ride car parks. Likewise, one such place is Sunderland Enterprise Park. This facility has clear road signs from Wessington Way (A1231 off the A19). Moreover, with buses leaving every five minutes, the service is good and well worth using.

Park and Walk: The University of Sunderland has let SAFC use their car parks on match days. But, there may be a charge. However, the walk to the ground can be much easier this way. So, look out for signs for the University car parks at both Chester Road (A183) and St Peters.
