Election: Sunderland City Council – Local Elections 2022.
Date: Thursday, the 5th of May 2022 – polling stations closed at 10 pm prompt.

The count was at Silksworth Sports Complex, and Covid prevention measures were in force again.

Winners and losers:

These mid-term elections on Wearside have not thrown up too many surprises. However, the Labour Party on Wearside, having lost many seats in recent elections, fought back by only losing one seat to the Lib-Dems. The Liberal Democrats also took a council seat from the Conservative Party.

The Tories did not suffer too badly, which is usually the trend for the ruling party in mid-term elections. That was despite Partygate and the cost of living crisis. Be that as it may, people can see the difficulties facing Boris Johnson with the Ukrainian war and having conquered COVID-19.

Sunderland has 75 local councillors available, and after this result, the City Council consists of the following:

Labour Party (41 seats) -1
Conservative Party (18 seats) -1
Lib Dems (14 seats) +2
Independent (1 seat) – no change
Green Party (0 seats) – no change

** Due to the death of a local councillor in the Copt Hill Ward, the elections there were paused. That seat remains vacant at this time.

Sunderland Council Results in 2022 Conclusion

The turnout for these local council elections was poor, with an average turnout of 33.6% of the electorate casting their vote. The ward with the highest turnout was Fulwell at 47.3%. That provided a win for the Lib-Dems (formerly a Tory stronghold). The lowest turnout was in the Redhill ward, with only 24.1% of people visiting the polling station to cast their vote.

These election results were stagnant on Wearside with no real concerns from the local political parties. There were slight changes but, all in all, a pretty much run-of-the-mill, mid-term council election.
