Charlie Hurley was voted Sunderland's player of the century in 1979, but is probably our greatest-ever player and nicknamed "The King".
King Charlie played in over 400 games for SAFC.
He was with Sunderland for 12 years after joining the club in 1957.
Charlie was the greatest centre-half the world has ever seen - fact!
Before joining Sunderland he was with Millwall and after SAFC, he went to Bolton Wanderers.
The King had a go at managing Reading where he became the first manager to quit a team mid-way through a football game.
Flags are flying at half-mast at the Stadium of Light.

Re: Charlie Hurley Dies, Aged 87
Carlie Hurley is a Sunderland legend without a shadow of a doubt. People still talk about him to this day. Not many people under 50 will know much about him, but he will always be known as one of Sunderland's greatest players.
