I like Wilkinsons in Sunderland, so much stuff. But if customer figures are dropping due to online buying I can see why such a large shop can suffer.

I went there about two weeks ago for some gardening stuff and the shelves were empty.

Wilko in Sunderland is a massive store but I have noticed it is not that busy when I go, such a shame because it had everything.

Today (September 11), it was announced that takeover bids have failed and that all 400 Wilko stores will be closing down. According to the GMB union, all Wilkos will close by early October.

Last week it was announced which 52 Wilko stores will be the first to close. Tomorrow (September 12) 24 stores in the UK will close, while on Thursday (September 14) 28 more stores will shut.



After weeks of uncertainty, discount store B&M struck a deal to buy up to 51 Wilko stores for a price of £13 million. This deal doesn’t necessarily save any jobs: it will just see B&M take over retail spots.

As of today (September 11), other takeover deals have failed. Canadian entrepreneur Doug Putman – the guy behind HMV’s recent resurgence in the UK – was apparently working on a deal to save 300 of Wilko’s 400 stores and 12,000 jobs. This has now fallen through.
